More information is being discovered all the time about Zika Virus. We know that about 80% of people infected with the virus don’t know they are carriers, but 20% of infected people experience rashes, fever, joint pain, and/or conjunctivitis.New information is showing a link to an infection known as myelitis, which causes inflammation in the spinal cord. Infection to the central part of the nervous system often leads to difficulty moving and paralysis. Evidence is growing that Zika Virus may cause Guillain-Barré syndrome, which is a condition causing intense joint pain, paralysis, even death.The Aedes aegypti species of mosquito spreads Zika Virus and propagates through mosquito bites of infected humans then the mosquito goes on to infect numbers of other humans. The Aedes aegypti mosquito species is common all over the Western Hemisphere. Making matters worse, scientists have discovered Zika can also be transmitted sexually. World Health Organization Director Margaret Chan said this week “Reports and investigations in several countries strongly suggest that sexual transmission of the virus is more common than previously assumed.”
